Your name or any nicknames you have?
Tom Robbins- So many nicknames. Rom Tobbins comes up most.
Where are you at in the world? Where will you be fishing this year?
Work full time in Boston. Just got a raft so I will be rowing more than wading. I live in the epicenter of Striped Bass Fishing. But I’m a sworn trout guy.
What river(s) and lake(s) do you guide/fish?
Mostly the Berkshire Mountain Range in Western, MA. We have some epic rivers out there both freestones and tail waters.
How long have you been guiding/fly fishing?
Started when I was 12 fishing ponds and brook trout streams. But doubled down in a big way about 6 years ago.
What got you into fly fishing? When did you start?
Certainly my dad is who got me into it at a young age. But once I was out of college and working full time, fly fishing became an important way to unwind.
Why do you fly fish? What does it “do” for you?
My hometown of Concord, MA is home to the transcendental movement of the 1800’s (Thoreau, Emerson, Alcott, Hawthorne, etc.). Fly fishing is a way for me to connect with that kindred spirit. In fact, I have caught native brook trout not far from the site of Thoreau’s “Walden” cabin.
If you own and use a Rod Vault, what do you like about you Rod Vault?
Very proud Rod Vault owner. I love the liner material. I drive a long way to fish and its nice knowing my rod is safe. I also love knowing that there are fantastic people behind this product.
What is a piece of advice you want to give to other anglers or a tip/trick that has helped you grow as an angler?
Easiest question on the list. HOURS SPENT. There is absolutely no substitute. Years ago I forced myself to fish (almost exclusively) the most technical river in MA, a big western-style tailwater. I was way outside my comfort zone for a long long time. But hours and experiences accumulate. Before I knew it, I was making tremendous strides. Set a goal for number of trips in a year. Then exceed it by 20!
Who has influenced you most as an angler?
Another easy one. The guide community on my home river, the Deerfield. I am lucky to have met some of the very best trout fishermen on the east coast. I look up to these guys, and they have shown/taught me so much. But most importantly they are stewards of the water and set an example for others to follow.
What’s your favorite new piece of gear?
My LITERALLY brand new Stealthcraft raft. Her name is Deerdra. She has three seats, two oars and but one heart.
What is your favorite fly? (To tie, or catch fish on?)
It’s gotta be a dry. Probably a stimulator. So versatile and gets those quick instinctive takes.
Best catch of all time?
25” Brown trout on a streamer in my homewater. I will remember every ounce of that moment forever. Truly euphoric.
What's your "Dream Trip"?
New Zealand for big browns! Also dying to explore more Colorado Rivers.
What are some of the best places you’ve been fishing?
Gasparilla for Tarpon/Snook and of course camping along the Roaring Fork! Some low key jealousy knowing the rivers you’ve got in CO…
How do people follow you on social media or reach you?
