Every Friday here at Denver Outfitters we have a featured angler for #FlyGalFriday. We started the Fly Gal Friday hashtag to help promote the amazing women of fly fishing! Enjoy today’s post and don’t forget to check out the other featured anglers from weeks past.
Your name or any nicknames you have?
Chantel Deneumoustier // Chan, Chanty or the ever so dreaded Shane McMahon (thanks to my older brother for that one)
Where are you at in the world? Where will you be fishing this year?
I am situated on the West Coast of British Columbia, Canada. I am spending the month of July backpacking through Peru and hope to catch some fish along the way. I also have the opportunity to work in Terrace BC this year, and you bet I will be spending some time on the Skeena river for summer steelhead.
I do most of my fishing on the coastal rivers of the lower mainland, but I have recently been exploring the Interior lake system, and I am loving it.
How long have you been fly fishing?
I have been fly fishing for about a year now, but my child hood was spent on the vedder river float fishing with my father and brother.
Angling has always been a big part of my life. My childhood was spent tagging along on fishing trips with my brother and father. I didn’t start really learning the art of fly fishing until early 2015.
As a woman fly angler, you’re definitely in the minority. What made you decide to be an angler?
I have always had a love for the outdoors, and for a challenge. Between my line of work and fly fishing, I am used to being the minority. I love the idea of being new at something, and quite honestly being bad at something. I like taking all the steps from the painful begining and watching and feeling myself transform and get better every day.
My favorite new piece of gear is my Allen 7/8WT Kraken, I am so excited to put it to use on salmon this upcoming fall.
Best catch of all time?
My favorite catch of all time is the beautiful Shuswap rainbow trout I caught last July, I named her Jenny.
What’s your “Dream Trip”?
I honestly can not narrow it down to just one “dream trip”. I am currently working on my fishing bucket list, then I am going to narrow it down by priority, and then I am going to schedule pretty much the next 5 years of my life! On that list is monster trout in Blue Ridge GA, high country cutties in Colorado, flats fishing for bonefine in Belize, Arctic Char in the Northwest Territories, sea trout in the UK, bull trout in the Kootenays region of BC, and of course Skeena steelhead.
What are some of the best places you’ve been fishing?
My favorite fishing spots to date have been the river system right in my own back yard. There is nothing more rewarding than spending your days wading down a river you spent your childhood summers swimming in, being that disruptive kid to the angler going to trout. I try not to get annoyed by the kids, since I was once one of them.
