Your name or any nicknames you have?

Mandi Robertson

Where are you at in the world? Where will you be fishing this year?

I am very fortunate to live in beautiful Bend Oregon, with some of the best trout fishing you can find. I also spend a few times a year visiting family in the Midwest chasing northern pike, musky and bass. Though I’m really ready to plan my next salt water trip and see where that takes me. There are so many cool places to choose from and new species to chase, so we’ll see where I end up!

What river(s) and lake(s) do you guide/fish?

I spend a majority of my time chasing trout on the Deschutes, Crooked and Fall rivers. Taking the boat out on any of the cascade lakes is a blast too, and you sure can’t beat those views!

How long have you been guiding/fly fishing?

About 4 years

What got you into fly fishing? When did you start?

My boyfriend Eddie Mack and I began our adventures in fly fishing together about 4 years ago. We were both new to the sport and excited to give it a whirl. It was such a fun experience getting to learn, explore and share this new found passion together. We’ve had a lot of fun together, and I couldn’t have asked for a better fishing buddy!! He is now an incredible fishing guide for Bend’s Fly and Field Outfitters!

Why do you fly fish?  What does it “do” for you?

Simple it makes me incredibly happy!! I get to spend time in nature, I get to learn something new every time I hit the water and I get to share my experience with someone I love! It doesn’t get better then that!

As a woman guide/angler, you’re definitely in the minority.  What made you decide to be a guide/angler?

I think I got into it because my boyfriend and I are both active adventuresome people, and we realized almost immediately that this was a passion that we both shared! That fishing was going to become a huge part of our lives, and it sure did!

Has the fact you’re a female ever been an issue with a client or other angler (such as them hitting on you or maybe talking down to you?)  If so how did you manage it/them?

When we first got started in the sport I definitely noticed that when Eddie and I would go into fly shops that the shops guys would immediately give him attention and never really talk to me directly when answering questions. This was pretty frustrating because it made me feel like the tag along girlfriend and not angler that was taking this serious and trying to learn! Bend’s fly fishing community is pretty tight knit though, and I like I’ve definitely became a part of that. So this isn’t an issue anymore!

Do you think being a woman gives you a different perspective as an angler/guide?  If so, how?

I think every fisherman and fisherwoman alike have their own unique perspectives, which comes from each ones individual experiences. I realize that women are in the minority when it comes to this sport. And I do think the my days out on the water fishing with the girls is completely different than spending the day out with the boys. But as long as I’m out there having fun, it’s all the same to me!

What is a piece of advice you want to give to other anglers or a tip/trick that has helped you grow as an angler?

Spend as much time on the water as possible! Every time you’re out there you gain from it, whether it’s learning something new, seeing something in a different perspective or just enjoying the moment! Never take a second you’re out there for granted! And it’s twice the experience if you have someone special out there to share it with!

What’s your favorite new piece of gear?

I’m a sucker for Reddington rods and the Ross CLA reel. As far as new gear my boyfriend just bought me a new Patagonia sling pack and it’s pretty much the best bag ever!

What is your favorite fly? (To tie, or catch fish on?)

Thin mint! aka “the pike fly”! This fly has been a part of many unforgettable fish for me, never leave home without it!

Best catch of all time?

Probably have to be my Crooked River monster! It was beautiful, big and completely unexpected! It was a fish with a little controversy, because no one seemed to know why or how it was in that particular river. But man I could care less, I was stoked!

What’s your “Dream Trip”?

Well if I won the lottery or something crazy like that I would go to Lakshadweep and catch a massive GT! Which is number one on my bucket list of fish! I don’t even have words for how amazing I think this place is, it would definitely be a dream come true to visit someday!

What are some of the best places you’ve been fishing?

Every place I fish is on that list, even if it’s not good fishing!
