Where are you at in the world? Where will you be fishing this year?
Boston, MA. The summer has finally arrived which means stripers are back for the season! I’m mostly a salt water angler in the North Shore area however within the past year or two I’ve been getting into fresh water as well. The more the merrier 🙂
While I am not a guide I do enjoy the hell out of flyfishing and have often thought about pursuing more of a career in this field. For now it’s just play & passion.
How long have you been guiding/fly fishing?
I’ve been fishing since day 1 thanks to my dad. He’s an avid fly fisherman and got me out on the water at a very young age. More specifically I’ve been fly fishing since my sophomore year of college (8 years ago!…time flies). I cut my teeth fly fishing for bonefish in the Bahamas (Crooked Island). That will get you addicted very quickly.
I’m my fathers daughter. Fortunately I think it’s in my DNA.
Do you think being a woman gives you a different perspective as a guide? If so, how?
As I mentioned I don’t guide but I love fly fishing with others. It is truly my happy place and I love sharing that experience with family or friends. Music and beer never hurt as a nice addition 🙂
As I’m getting more involved in the fly fishing industry I’m learning more and more how women involvement is a rarity. I don’t see any reason why fly fishing has to be a male dominated sport. I think most women would fall in love with it if given the opportunity. Hopefully the popularity among women continues to increase. All anyone needs (male or female) is their first fish and it’s love at first sight!
Just bought a stripping basket that I’m looking forward to putting to use while wading for stripers. I think it should help with more of a zing in the line.
Best catch of all time?
I just got back from a dream trip to Belize a few weeks ago with my dad and boyfriend. I can only describe it as magical. Endless turquoise ocean and flats to explore. We fished for 8-9hrs a day. I hooked 2 permit throughout the duration of the week which I would say was a major challenge and best catch yet! Coming for tarpon next…
What’s your “Dream Trip”?
Now that I’ve checked Belize off my bucket list I’d pretty much travel anywhere to catch a golden dorado. That puts me in South America somewhere (probably Argentina). I’m always up for an adventure.
This is a tough question to answer. I would argue some of the best places I’ve been fishing are right outside my back door. Striper surface feeds never get old.
Another amazing trip was a couple of years ago to Labrador, Canada. Monster size brook trout (7-9lbs) and beautiful streams. I would go back in a heartbeat.
How do people get ahold of you for guiding / sponsorship?
Not a guide but a passionate fly fisherman! My Instagram handle is jenny_tates for messages.
